What Is American Whiskey?

American Whiskey doesn’t just have one side, but many. It encompasses many well-known forms of spirits that stretch back through American history including bourbon, rye, corn, wheat and beyond.

Regardless of the type, American whiskey is crafted from a mash bill of corn, rye, wheat and barley, then aged in charred-oak barrels. However, each derivative of whiskey has its own unique characteristics.

While the alcohol is crafted from a mixture of grains, the special flavor that lends itself to connoisseurs around the country comes from the wood of the barrel. In fact, American whiskey distillers are required by law to craft their spirits in new barrels only!

However, in America there is a much smaller market for blended whiskeys. On the contrary, straight whiskeys are highly favored in the United States and craft distilleries are beginning to crop up all over the country. How Is American Whiskey Made?

Bourbon Whiskey

Arguably the most popular, bourbon whiskey is produced in Kentucky 95% of the time. It must be a minimum of 51% corn and aged in new charred oak barrels.

Malt Whiskey

Malt whiskey is unique in that it requires a fermented mash bill consisting of at least 51% malted barley and must be distilled at a maximum of 80% ABV. If it’s made exclusively at a single distillery, it’s considered a single malt whiskey.

Rye Whiskey

As you might have guessed, rye whiskey must be distilled from a mash bill of at least 51% rye, also blended with corn or malted barley. Like malt whiskey, it’s also distilled at a maximum of 80% ABV. It is referred to as straight rye whiskey when aged for more than two years.

Corn Whiskey

Although bourbon requires a mash bill of at least 51% corn, corn whiskey earns its name from a much higher amount of 80%. It’s also considerably unique from the other whiskeys in that there is no legal requirement to age corn whiskey. If distillers do, however, choose to go through the aging process, then it must be done in uncharred barrels - again setting it apart from other varieties. At most, distillers will age corn whiskey for just a few months.

Wheat Whiskey

Wheat whiskeys get their name from the mash bill of at least 51% wheat grain. This type of whiskey is produced on a much smaller scale, often in micro distilleries as opposed to larger companies. Believe it or not, the hugely popular and revered Pappy Van Winkle carries wheated whiskeys.

Blended Whiskey

Just like its name, blended whiskeys are crafted from a variety of whiskey types with no requirement for a specific grain amount. Oftentimes, blended whiskeys will contain neutral grain spirits and sometimes colorings and flavoring. While not necessarily a sipping whiskey, it’s the perfect choice for a favorite cocktail.

Tennessee Whiskey

Tennessee whiskey is the most prevalent type next to bourbon. However, while most bourbon is produced in Kentucky, Tennessee whiskey is distilled in...you guessed it...Tennessee! It’s a rare type in that there are only four brands of Tennessee whiskey sold today including the well-known Jack Daniels. While not required by law, Tennessee whiskey is often filtered through a thick layer of maple charcoal, giving it its exceptionally sweet flavor.
